Short version of WHAT'S UP WITH THIS KID:
His spirit/soul is kind of stuck in that Shedinja's shell, oops. Guess it's a bad idea to look into the hole in their backs after all!
The Shedinja had no soul of its own through a freak occurrence, so it sucked in Max's instead. His body is essentially in a deep coma, but still alive. He's found he can use Shedinja's ghostly abilities to remote-possess his old body and puppet it around, and after quite a bit of practice can pass for a normal trainer.
He's now traveling around with his team in search of a way to return to normal, woo!
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:
-Psychic type pokemon will probably notice that the human body is not giving off actual waking brain waves, and all the actual thought is coming from the Shedinja instead.
-Pokemon that can sense auras, like Lucario, will notice that the aura around Max's human body is very thin, almost nonexistent, and instead the same exact aura is surrounding the Shedinja very strongly. The two bodies always have at least one thread of aura linking them.
-Ghost types may also be able to sense something weird?? Like that the spirit in the Shedinja is human, idek.
-Since Max essentially IS a Shedinja, he can understand pokemon!
